What is IT Security?

So what is IT Security and why is it important to you?  Information security is focused on protecting the important electronic data of groups and users. Specifically it refers to protecting the confidentiality, availability, and integrity of data; the so called CIA Triangle.

Some of the many terms for IT Security or Information Technology Security are:

  • Information Security or InfoSec
  • Data Security
  • Information Assurance
  • Computer Security

Many times these terms are used interchangeably however the main idea is the same.

First, security is a state of freedom from danger or risk.   Having protective measures in place ensures this state of freedom.

Second, information in this sense is digital information that is manipulated, stored and or transmitted over a network.  Because information is stored on hardware, manipulated by software, and transmitted over cables through the air all these mediums must be secured.

Remember that information security includes protecting the actual hardware, such as computers and modems, as well as the actual security policies, guidelines, and procedures.

The goals of information security are to stop data theft, maintain productivity, prevent Cyberterrorism, and avoid the legal consequences on not securing data.

Some of the federal and state laws that must be adhered to when it comes to protecting the privacy of electronic data are:

  • The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)
  • The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA)
  • The USA Patriot Act of 2001
  • The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (Sarbox)
  • The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA)
  • The California Database Security Breach Act of 2003

The penalties for violating these laws can be severe so individuals and organizations must make every effort to comply with these laws to avoid the consequences.

Securing information can be especially difficult in today’s highly networked environment because:

  • The speed of attack is increasing
  • Attacks are becoming more sophisticated.
  • Attack tools are simpler to use.
  • Most attacks now originate from more than one source.
