The Best Free Antivirus Software

If you search any computer security or software forum with the topic “what is the best antivirus software” you will quickly find out that it is a very heated discussion. Many commenters will be telling their personal experiences vouching for this software or that, and how Antivirus software A was able to detect a virus that Antivirus software B could not. Another will be touting a certain feature or the speed of execution. The nihilists will proclaim that the antivirus software you choose does not matter and you are never free from a virus infection and a complete reformatting of the hard drive is required.
We are cognizant of the fact that each computer user will have their own preferences when it comes to choosing the antivirus software that is best suited for them. While one user may want fast scanning another may require a built-in firewall.
Without getting into a pointed row, we want to give you our suggestions for the top free antivirus software available. These three were chosen because of their popularity and our own personal experiences. We will not try to rank them but instead randomly present them along with their respective benefits and faults.
So, when it comes to the best FREE antivirus software, the A’s win hands down. They are, in no particular order:
- Avast Home Edition Anti-Virus
- Avira Free Personal Anti-Virus
- AVG Anti-virus Free Edition
Lets begin with Avast. The user interface is relatively simple, functional, and customizable with loads of features. It has an ‘active protection’ feature that monitors seven different ways a virus could enter your computer which includes Internet browsing, checking emails, file sharing and so on.
Avast lets you scan the computer upon boot up. However, if you choose to scan on start up, the booting process may take a longer than usual.
Avira lacks the built-in anti-spyware detection system that Avast boasts, but it has a higher virus detection rate than Avast. The anti-spyware is available only with the paid version of Avira.
AVG is the most popular free antivirus software on the market. Its interface is polished and easy to use.
Although AVG detects viruses as well as spyware, its detection rate is slightly slower than Avast.
A lot of functionality is left out of the free version of AVG and is available only in the paid version. Despite this, AVG still provides good overall basic protection for your machine. In the end you will have to choose for yourself depending on your needs. The price is right so you can give all three a try.

Great article. There’s a lot of good info here, though I did want to let you know something – I am running Fedora with the up-to-date beta of Firefox, and the layout of your blog is kind of quirky for me. I can understand the articles, but the navigation doesn’t function so good.

Hi Pavelu,
Thanks for the feedback. Can you be more specific?
Are you talking about the main blog or our virtual campus?
In the meantime, let me explain. At the time of this comment our main site has 4 pages.
1. Home
2. Tools
3. Videos
4. About
All the blog posts are on the Home page. You can navigate through them, in chronological order, using the “Older Entries/Newer Entries” links at the bottom of the pages. The other 3 pages are single pages.
On the right sidebar you can sort the posts by categories and post title.
If you are having trouble inside our Virtual Campus send an email to support at: custserv@365computersecuritytraining.com
I hope this helps. We have tried to make the site as simple and straight forward as possible.

I used Norton Anivirus before and now I am using ESET x64 on PC. I like it. I suppose ESET Antivirus is the best!
